Contextual Bach Studies
A series of monographs exploring the contexts of Johann Sebastian Bach's life and music, with a particular emphasis on theology and liturgy. The music of Johann Sebastian Bach has been the object of intensive study and analysis, but has often been somewhat narrow in focus, discussed largely on its own terms without being fully set within the contextual perspective of the music of his predecessors, contemporaries, and successors. Only recently has the music of these other composers become accessible, allowing appreciation of the nature and stature of their accomplishments, and giving new perspectives on a more rounded picture of Bach's genius. The monographs in the
Contextual Bach Studies
series explore these contextual areas, including the liturgical and theological contexts of this music, and explorations of social, political, and cultural religious contexts in which Bach's music was composed and first heard.
